INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY CELL

Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is an umbrella term encompassing all technologies and tools used to access, manage, and transmit information. It includes a diverse range of devices and applications that enable people and organizations to interact in the digital world, from older technologies like radio and landline telephones to modern innovations like artificial intelligence and cloud computing. ICT is more comprehensive than Information Technology (IT), as it also includes telecommunications.

Importance of ICT

ICT has become an integral part of modern society, driving innovation and shaping the way we live, work, and learn.

  • Business: ICT helps businesses automate processes, reduce costs, and gain valuable insights from large amounts of data. E-commerce, customer relationship management (CRM) software, and big data analytics allow companies to increase their competitive edge.
  • Communication: Digital communication tools like email, social media, and video conferencing have revolutionized how people and organizations interact, enabling collaboration across geographical distances.
  • Education: In schools, ICT provides access to a wealth of online educational resources, enhances the learning experience through interactive tools, and can help personalize instruction.
  • Healthcare: ICT enables telehealth consultations, improves the management of patient data through electronic health records (EHRs), and advances medical research and diagnostics.
  • Economic Development: The ICT sector is a significant driver of economic growth globally, fostering digital empowerment and contributing to the development of a knowledge-based economy.
  • Daily life: ICT has permeated everyday life, from online banking and GPS navigation to social media and on-demand streaming services.

SWAYAM/NTPL

Swayam

SWAYAM is a programme initiated by Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.

NTPL

National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is a project of MHRD initiated by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati and Roorkee) along with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2003, to provide quality education to anyone interested in learning from the IITs. The main goal was to create web and video courses in all major branches of engineering and physical sciences at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and management courses at the postgraduate level.

NPTEL Online Certification Courses

Since 2013, through an online portal, 4-, 8-, or 12-week online courses, typically on topics relevant to students in all years of higher education along with basic core courses in sciences and humanities with exposure to relevant tools and technologies, are being offered. The enrolment to and learning from these courses involves no cost. An in-person, proctored certification exam (optional) will be conducted at Rs. 1000/- per course and a certificate is provided through the participating institutions and industry, when applicable.

Purpose: To ensure students maintain sufficient attendance to be eligible for university exams.

  • Responsibilities:
    • Monitoring subject-wise attendance.
    • Arranging extra classes for students with genuine medical absences.
    • Orienting students on the importance of attendance.
    • Communicating with parents about their wards' attendance.
